Xanthi

The Prefecture of Xanthi includes the area from the mountains of Rodopi, with the virgin woods and the lush flora and fauna, surrounded by the Nestos river and other smaller rivers that flow into the Aegean Sea, the Thracian Sea, and the Vistonida lake to the south of the region. In the middle of this area, the mountains soften and then form the lush plain of Xanthi with not only a varied agricultural production and the famous tobacco, but with cotton plantations, as well as grain and vegetables. Looking down south of the prefecture, the Nestos Delta can be seen with various wetlands, coasts, and the Vistonida Lake. The Prefecture of Xanthi is an ecological treasure with a lot of mountains, plains, and coasts. The area is full of fowl reptiles, animals, plants, and trees. Some of the animals live there on permanent bases while others are migratory. There are plenty of fish in the rivers, lakes, and sea. Human interference in this natural paradise of the region is discrete.

Xanthi has also a rich history and a characteristic example of it is the Old City. But Xanthi's history starts way back at time. It's easy to undestand that if with mention that there are 70 archaeological sites in Xanthi from the neolithic till the post byzantine era, and a lot more that haven't been found yet!

The Prefecture of Xanthi is not far from the island of Thassos, the only Island of Macedonia, that has a lot to show you and make your holidays unique. Thassos is very close to the mainland and if you stay there it gives you the opportunity to go for day excursions in the surrounding Prefectures.
